Erica …..Like It …Or Lump It asked: I’m sure almost everyone has heard the “bring the Cup back to Canada” line from Canadian hockey fans rooting for Canadian teams in the playoffs over US-based franchises. Even though I’m inclined to point out that some US teams have more Canadians on their rosters than someCanadian teams, I understand and respect that the Cup is sacred to Canadians and it is a matter of pride with hockey being “their” sport.
Recently, however, I was talking to a Red Wings fan who said they’d prefer to see a US team win the Cup over any Canadian team if the Wings were out of contention. I couldn’t recall hearing this from a US hockey fan before. There is not the same historical significance of the Cup with the US, the NHL playoffs are not an international competition, and personally, I don’t think I could cheer for a rival team to win the Cup after my favorite team is out of contention just because they’re a US team. So…
POLL (for US hockey fans): Do you prefer that a US team wins the Cup?
If you Canadian hockey fans want to weigh in (if, for example, you think it’s silly for US fans to want the Cup won by a US team) feel free to do so, of course.
