What’s so great about fighting in hockey?
Tuesday, April 28th, 2009OK, let me say up front that I don’t live, eat, breathe, and sleep hockey. I do, however, like hockey a lot. I’ve followed the game for about 10 years, and I’m a passionate Red Wings fan.
But one thing I have never been able to understand is why fighting is not just tolerated in hockey, but also supported by so many fans.
I just don’t get the appeal of stopping the game to let two guys dance around in a circle and start flailing on each other, while the refs skate around them and look on, doing nothing, until someone hits the ice.
What am I missing?
Please don’t get me wrong. I love the physicality of the game. I love contact sports. Football and rugby are my two favorite sports, followed by hockey. In football, I love bone-crushing tackles. In hockey, I love hard checks into the boards and punishing open-ice hits. That’s all part of the game.
But in football, if two guys start pushing each other around, the officials immediately run in between them and break them up.
I hear people say how hockey is such an intense game that these guys need an outlet for their emotions. But football is an intense game, too, and you don’t see brawls breaking out on the 50-yard line at every game.
European hockey players barely ever drop the gloves, either … it seems to be unique to North American hockey. Is it because the penalties are stiffer in Europe for fighting? Is it because people feel like they have to get more scrappy and fight for space on our smaller rinks?
Seriously, what is it?
I feel like I’m the only person who likes hockey but hates the fights.
No nasty comments, please … I honestly want to try to understand what I’m missing here.

NO HOCKEY TEAMS HERE. how can I find one?
Sunday, April 19th, 2009As you all know, the south has absolutely NO interest in hockey. There are NO hockey teams, and I have met no one who shares a passion for hockey as I do. How can I find a field hockey or ice hockey team? Any websites that can help me?! I am dying on a vine here! Hockey season just ended… my boys won the cup, GO RED WINGS!, and I need something to keep me occupied through the summer. Any yellow pages for hockey teams? Also, any camps that you know of would be greatly appreciated! Thanks to all and God bless!
HA! A puck bunny? What a low life! Puck bunnies are ***** who only want a peice of the players… not a peice of the game! I would appreciate it if you didn’t jump to conclusions just because none of my questions pertain to hockey… No, I’m not a puck bunny, just a person looking for a good game to play! Thanks for the unhelpful answer!
AND NO, OSGOOD IS NOT HOT

What about 18? Umm.18 Days until NHL hockey?
Sunday, April 19th, 2009It’s the Countdown! Actually, I can see myself getting bored with this right around 14 days, lol.
1.Hossa, Marian , # 18….now playing for the Red Wings for one year, as we all know. Marcel Hossa is playing the in the KHL. What are the chances of Marian moving to the KHL, after his one-year contract with the Wings? Or does it depend if Detroit wins the Cup this season?
2.In China, there is a tradition that the number 18 means, “that one is going to prosper”. Therefore, the 18th floor in most buildings is considered the penthouse or more exquisite than other floors in the building. If you had the choice to live on the average TOP floor (63rd floor) of a building in Hong Kong or the fancy (prestigious) 18th floor, which would you choose?
3.18 skaters can be dressed for a game (not including goalies). If they changed the rule to 20 players being allowed to dress and play, would you be outraged?
4.Would you rather watch the last 18 seconds of the NHL finals last year, watch 18 minutes of some random woman’s field hockey game, or 18 hours of continuous ****?
5.In most countries, when you turn 18, you are officially an adult and you are suddenly legal to do many things. Did you do anything on your 18th birthday, that you were not legally able to do when you were 17?
6.Rule Number 18 is the Double-Minor Penalty. Since there is no such thing as a double MAJOR penalty, is this a little redundant? Why not just call it a double penalty?
