How many of you USA hockey fans root for the Stanley Cup to be won by US-based franchises over Canadian ones?
I’m sure almost everyone has heard the “bring the Cup back to Canada” line from Canadian hockey fans rooting for Canadian teams in the playoffs over US-based franchises. Even though I’m inclined to point out that some US teams have more Canadians on their rosters than someCanadian teams, I understand and respect that the Cup is sacred to Canadians and it is a matter of pride with hockey being “their” sport.
Recently, however, I was talking to a Red Wings fan who said they’d prefer to see a US team win the Cup over any Canadian team if the Wings were out of contention. I couldn’t recall hearing this from a US hockey fan before. There is not the same historical significance of the Cup with the US, the NHL playoffs are not an international competition, and personally, I don’t think I could cheer for a rival team to win the Cup after my favorite team is out of contention just because they’re a US team. So…
POLL (for US hockey fans): Do you prefer that a US team wins the Cup?
If you Canadian hockey fans want to weigh in (if, for example, you think it’s silly for US fans to want the Cup won by a US team) feel free to do so, of course.
